Lot 4492
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 20 mm, 3.09 g, 6 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Lugdunum, irregular mint, after 324. CONSTAN-TINVS AG [sic] Laureate head of Constantine I to right. Rev. PROVIDN-TIAE AVG / PLG Campgate with no doors and two turrets; above, star. Cf. RIC 225 (for prototype). The reverse a bit weak, otherwise, about extremely fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

The style of this coin is clearly unofficial, indicating that it is a contemporary 'barbarous' imitation. It is similar to RIC 225 (Lugdunum) but with a typically unofficial portrait and two spelling errors in the reverse legend.
